I have to start out by saying I believe this is a very bad time to be dealing with a schedule change. I think most believe that the movement of the 9th grade to the Sr. High is pretty much a done deal. For that reason alone, we should table this item until that is decided. You know the schedule will have to change again at that point to accomodate the 9th grade.
I don't want to see us lose the lunch period that we have now. I use the time at lunch often to be ready for class in the afternoon. Even if it is just some time to relax. I think we are forgetting that somtimes just a little down time will be what you need to renew yourself for the afternoon. If we are going to cut down lunches to 30 minutes, then we should just close campus. We will be asking for trouble to have students rushing back here to beat the 30 minutes they have. Are we doing this for kids, or are we just trying to get kids out of the hall so they don't need supervision?
Lets have the meetings and such after school or before school. We can't help it if students don't want to attend outside of school time. They may not want to be in the club that badly. We don't move basketball, track, or football practice to 2nd period because we can't get enough participation after school do we? Why is a club or group any different? I would like to know how many students are actually attending the meetings. Are we disrupting the schedules of 900 students so 100 or so can meet?
I agree totally with having reading time and that it will help with student success, but I also think that every day is too much to expect. Many schools have done away with this read time because after a period of time, it felt overdone and students lost interest.
I may follow up with something else, but that is all I have time for now. I don't want everyone to think I am just complaining. I would just like some of these issues addressed before a final decision is made. They are just my opinions.

Personally, I am fan of option 3. The current schedule, is not horrible, but I think somethings needs to be done to take a way the holding pen, for the cattle, I mean students. Majority of them are not using that time wisely. Even with creative implementation of study hall rules and extra time with the teacher, students don't get the concept. Plus they are hungry...I think the most frustrating part of any schedule will be never knowing what day it is. I do find it odd that we only have a regular schedule 2 times a week... I think this discussion needs to continue and I find it refreshing that the teachers are able to express thier opinion, no matter what the outcome may be.
I think that the time spent reading every day is one one of the most valuable uses of time at school. (and outside) Benefits of teens reading for fun. http://school.familyeducation.com/teen/reading/40617.html
"Repetition strengthens and enforces habbit." Hopefully we can create life long learners. Humphrey High actually has a graduation requirement that they have to pass AR (Accelerated Reader) at a 9th grade reading level. (Really tough to do since many of our books are written below 7th.) The schedule that looks the best to me is 3. A problem we do need to consider is having the library hours extended. We have many students coming in around 7:30, spend lunch hours here working and would stay until 6:00 at night if we would let them. MANY MANY of our students do not have computer access at home. Before school and into 1st period often we have students scrambling to finish printing assignments. Jody
I don't have strong feeling on which schedule works best for all. A consistent schedule is what I believe will be most beneficial to the students. Mary L.
